How you can improve your meditation practice

People are always looking to improve their lives. And, with the current state of the world, it’s no wonder that meditation has become such a popular way to improve one’s life. However, many people find it difficult to improve their meditation and often never fully reap the benefits that meditation can offer. It could be that we are asking ourselves the wrong questions. We should not ask how to improve our mediation, but rather how we can improve ourselves so that we can improve our meditation.


A positive and often life-changing experience, meditation is something that more and more people are turning to for relief from stress, anxiety, pain, and other health concerns. It can help improve sleep quality, sharpen focus and concentration, boost energy levels, improve heart health, and so much more.


How you can improve your meditation

We’ve all had those moments where we sit down to meditate and our mind won’t stop racing. It seems like no matter how hard we try to focus, we can’t seem to get our minds to calm down. If this is something you’re struggling with, don’t worry-you’re not alone. Here are a few tips on how to improve your meditation practice and finally find that inner peace that you’re looking for.


Different places to meditate:

Often we stick to one place and one place only when we meditate.  We sit on the same spot on the floor, in the same chair, or even outside in the same spot. And while there’s nothing wrong with this, sometimes changing up your location can jump start your meditation practice. If you typically meditate at home, try going for a walk and finding a quiet place outdoors to sit and clear your mind.

You can improve your meditation practice by trying out different places to meditate. Some people prefer to meditate in a quiet place indoors, while others find that being outdoors in nature helps them relax and focus more easily. Experiment with different locations and see what works best for you.


How to focus:


Why is it such a struggle to focus? Because the mind is designed to think. That’s its job. So, when we try to focus on something else, like our breath, the mind often resists. It’s important to remember that it’s normal for your mind to wander during meditation-the key is to gently bring your focus back to your breath whenever you notice your thoughts have drifted.

You can improve your focus by trying out different techniques. If you find it difficult to focus on your breath, try focusing on a mantra or repeating a certain word or phrase in your mind. You can also try counting each inhale and exhale until you reach 10. Once you’ve reached 10, start back at 1 again. The key is to find a technique that works for you, and to be patient. Just keep coming back to your breath whenever you notice your thoughts have drifted.


Breathing techniques:


Sometimes we hit a wall in our meditation practice because we’re not using the right breathing techniques. If you struggle to focus or feel anxious, it might be time to try a different breathing technique.

A common breathing technique is 4-7-8 breathing. To do this, simply breathe in for four counts, hold your breath for seven counts, and then breathe out for eight counts. This breathing pattern helps slow down your heart rate and can be very calming.

Try out different breathing techniques and see which ones help you improve your meditation practice the most. Don’t get discouraged if it takes some time to find the right technique for you-just keep trying until you find something that works.


Positive reinforcement:


It’s important to remember that meditation takes time and effort to improve. Don’t get discouraged if you have a few bad meditations or if your mind won’t seem to calm down. Just keep at it and eventually you will see progress.

One of the best things we can do with ourselves is to be gentle.  Whenever you have a good meditation, take a moment to appreciate it. And when things don’t go as planned, simply let it go and start fresh next time. The more positive reinforcement we give ourselves, the easier it will be to improve our meditation practice and keep it at it even on the days when it feels tough.

Stop beating yourself up if you don’t feel like you’re “doing it right.” Everyone’s meditation practice is different, and there is no right or wrong way to meditate. Set small goals for yourself, and celebrate each accomplishment-no matter how small. This will help keep you motivated and improve your practice.
